Session Title: Engineering for Humanity–New Opportunities and Responsibilities in the 21st Century

Abstract:

Facing today’s grand challenges around the world, the engineering field has unprecedented opportunities to contribute to solutions to many open problems, especially after the recent COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, and the ominous impacts of climate change. Guided by the School’s vision, Engineering for humanity, Columbia Engineering is committed to transformative research and innovation that aims to create a better world by advancing a healthy, secure, connected, sustainable, and creative humanity. I will share the history and current efforts of how Columbia Engineering helps develop technology breakthroughs addressing such global challenges. I will present exemplar inventions by Columbiaengineers in the past 150+ years and recent initiatives, such as the urban tech initiative for future pandemics and emergency preparedness, intelligent modeling and response strategies for climate change, biomedical innovations for precision medicine, and the first masters level dual-degree program across engineering and business that emphasizes human-centric design and innovation.
